New Homeowner? Common Plumbing Problems Explained

If you have recently purchased your first home, you’re probably enjoying getting it all kitted out and decorated, arranging and re-arranging the furniture to suit your tastes, and maybe even doing some work in the garden.

Enjoy these times while they last, for while there are many rewards of being a homeowner, sooner or later you’re going to encounter a problem of some kind that you’ll need to fix. Chances are that one of the first issues you’ll have to deal with is a plumbing issue.

Here are some of the most common plumbing related problems you might experience:

A Leaky Faucet

Is your faucet drip-drip-dripping? The sound alone can drive you crazy, but wait until you find how much water you’re wasting because of a leaky faucet. A typical leaky faucet wastes up to three liters of water per day. That’s money that is literally just going down the drain.

A Clogged Toilet

Even worse than a leaky faucet, of course, is a plugged-up toilet. This is particularly true if you only have one toilet! Many everyday clogs can be eliminated with a plunger. There are even specially made ones that are designed to work with toilets rather than with sink drains, and which prevent splash back. If that doesn’t take care of the problem, you will have to call in the pros.

Low Water Pressure

There are a couple of reasons you could have low water pressure. One of the most common is calcium buildup on the aerator or shower head. These are two fairly simple fixes that many homeowners feel confident about tackling on their own, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. The low water pressure you are experiencing could well be due to a more serious issue.

Slow or Clogged Drains

Is there anything more exasperating that waiting for a sink or tub full of water to drain? Unfortunately, this is also a fairly frequent plumbing issue that homeowners have to deal with. In a tub or shower, the problem is likely hair. In a kitchen sink (or worse, a dishwasher) the culprit is likely food debris.

You can try to use a commercial drain cleaning solution to tackle a slow, clogged drain, but they generally aren’t very effective. You could spend a bundle on multiple trips to the hardware store and multiple jugs of solution, or you could simply call a plumber from the get-go and have them take care of things.

Ultra Plumbing& Roofing will assist you not only with these minor problems, but also with plumbing emergencies.

Perhaps the only thing worse than having to deal with a repair or home-maintenance issue is having to deal with it in the middle of the night or on a holiday weekend. And yet that’s almost always when such emergencies arise.
