Home Remedies to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a pest that we have all had to deal with in our lives, as they are very well adapted to living in and around our homes. They prefer moist, warm and sheltered areas which makes our homes a perfect environment for them to live and thrive in. Especially since there is always a readily available supply of food and water available. Even though cockroaches are so common, they are still hard to remove.   • Make your own, cockroach bait. 

One way to easily get rid of cockroaches in your home to create your own cockroach bait. To do this mix three parts boric acid with one part icing sugar. This works as the sugar attracts the cockroaches to your trap, and then when they get there the boric acid kills them. This is also a great solution if you have a busy home and family, as boric acid isn’t toxic to people or pets. So, it is much safer to use around your family than store bought pesticides. Although it is still best to use it in hard to reach areas, such as under the fridge, around the edge of cupboards and under your bed.

  • Bay Leaves

Bay leaves is an effective home remedy for roaches, which will help you to repel the roaches and act as natural cockroach repellent. The best way to use bay leaves is to crush the leaves a little bit, so the essential oils and fragrance comes out. Then to sprinkle the leaves in the area where cockroaches are living. Although this solution does not kill roaches, it does deter them and can be effective at making them leave your home all together. The stronger and fresher the bay leaves, the faster the cockroaches will leave your home.

  • Make Use of Hair Spray

Cockroaches are notoriously hard to kill, so when you do find individuals and want to ensure they are dead before disposing of them. The best way to do this is to spray them with hair spray. This works as hair spray is stick, so the wings of cockroaches get glued and they cannot escape. It also blocks their airways causing them to suffocate.  

  • Essential Oils

Essential oils are easy to find today, and many have been used for thousands of years for a variety of practical applications. Good news is essential oils are also a good natural repellent for cockroaches and other household pests. The following oils are often used to create sprays that deter and kill roaches, peppermint oil, tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil. The best thing about this home remedy is it is safe to use around your children, plus is also makes your home smell beautiful. You can spray your mixture around your home without worrying about toxicity while you send cockroaches packing.

  • Diatomaceous Earth

Another effective and natural way to kill cockroaches is through the use of diatomaceous earth, also referred to as DE. DE is non-toxic and an effective way to rid roaches and other pests. It comes in a powdered form and works by attacking the exoskeletons of the roaches and absorbs fats and oils from outer layer dehydrating them. It is an effective way to kill roaches and can be applying to the areas where you have seen cockroaches.

Apply diatomaceous earth on places where cockroaches travel.
